The Birmingham Drug Action Team's (BDAT) aim in relation to young people is to 'prevent today's young people from becoming tomorrow's problem drug users.'

The BDAT works in conjunction with Every Child Matters: Change for Children Agenda which is a big project across England that involves everyone who works with children and young people.  This includes teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, youth workers and many other people and agencies.

FRANK offers free and confidential advice about drugs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can refer you to your local drugs services.

Birmingham is one of 30 High Focus Areas selected on the basis of local need and levels of current service provision including deprived/high crime areas where drug misuse problems are prevalent.  This means that there has been a lot of FRANK activity in Birmingham ranging from an increased presence on radio, advertising on phone boxes and peer to peer street marketing.

A successful initiative in Birmingham was the introduction of the FRANK marketing campaign into local schools.

You can talk to FRANK in a number of different languages - a translator will be made available if required.

If you wish to talk to FRANK as a concerned young person, parent or carer about drugs please email frank@talktofrank.com.

This site gives detailed information on all aspects of the drug strategy for the Drug Action Teams in England.  It includes information on the Young People's Substance Misuse Partnership Grant 2006/7, Young People's Drug Strategy and other aspects such as the Evey Child Matters Agenda.

In 2003 the Government published a green paper called Every Child Matters.  This was published alongside the formal response to the report into the death of Victoria Climbie, the young girl who was horrifically abused and tortured and eventually killed.

The green paper built on existing plans to strengthen preventative services by focusing on four key themes:-

  • Increasing the focus on supporting families and carers - the most critical influence on children's lives;
  • Ensuring necessary intervention takes place before children reach crisis point and protecting children from falling through the net;
  • Addressing the underlying problems identified in the report into the death of Victoria Climbie - weak accountability and poor integration;
  • Ensuring that the people working with children are valued, rewarded and trained.
